WAITAKERE SCOOPS MEDALS AND PIZZA AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS

A 29-strong team of athletes made the long trek from Auckland to Dunedin to compete against 1200 other hopefuls at the Special Olympics’ National Summer Games in November.

Team Waitakere celebrated their medal haul with a full team dinner, courtesy of Hell Pizza. Waitakere’s contingent of athletics, basketball and ten-pin bowling competitors all took home medals, which coach and coordinator May Langley put down to years of hard work and training. “We had a fantastic time in Dunedin and all the athletes thoroughly deserve their reward,” said May. “Our team – including support staff – totalled 38, so it was no mean feat getting everyone there; in fact, it took four years of fundraising. “We’d like to thank Hell Pizza in South Dunedin for shouting us all dinner on the final night – it was hugely appreciated by everyone.”
